Chevrolet Sonic Frozen Oot of Canadian Dealers, Eh. Sorry

That sound you heard at the Canadian Chevy dealer? It wasn’t a boom as the Sonic flew off the sales floor lately. A new report says that the Sonic is going away up North for 2019.

The report comes from GM Authority, who says that they’ve heard the news from multiple sources familiar with the situation. Though GM Canada hasn’t confirmed it yet.

As of the end of November 2018, Chevrolet had moved just 2,823 Sonics in Canada for the year. That’s despite an update to the car in 2017. For the month of November alone, sales plummeted from 331 in 2017 to just 12 last year. With sales like that, dropping the car doesn’t seem like a tough decision.

If the Sonic is gone in Canada, traditionally a strong market for tiny cars, it could mean the end is near in the US as well. It’s already been dropped in most of the world, replaced by other cars more suited to developing markets like the Chevy Onix/Prisma. Dropping the car in Canada would mean that the Sonic would be sold only in the US and South Korea. While Canadian sales have dropped from a high of 9,400 a year in 2013, US sales aren’t doing any better. Down from 93,518 in 2013 to just under 20,000 in 2018.
