Almost “Like a Rock”: GMC Granite Caught Testing by Sebastien Bell August 13, 2018 Share Comments Today we have our first look at a brand new GMC subcompact crossover. Reportedly called the Granite, it will be based on the same platform as the Buick Encore and the Chevrolet Trax. As a result of being based on the Gamma II platform, it will have access to a number of small, transverse-mounted engines. Power is likeliest to come from the Encore’s 1.4-liter turbo four, with the power going to the wheels through a six-speed auto. Based on the spy pictures, it will look better than the Encore, though. Although not a particularly high bar, these pictures show a prouder hood with an overall more squared off, SUV-ish exterior. This would mark a departure from GMC’s current lineup, which is made up of rebadged Chevys with more chrome and leather. The Granite will enter a well-served market. The sub-compact crossover will have to go to battle against the Jeep Renegade, the Mazda CX-3, and the Subaru Crosstrek, among others. Expect to see the Granite in your nearest GMC dealer sometime in 2020.
